Prayer Thot of the Day (July 31)

Rock of Ages
Backgrounder: Converted while
attending the University of Dublin
Augustus Toplady decided to
prepare for the ministry and
became a preacher in Blagdon.
While travelling along gorge of
Barrington Combe in Mendip Hills
Toplady was caught in a storm.
Finding shelter in a gap in the
gorge, he was struck by the title
and scribbled the initial lyrics,
possibly also inspired by Psa 62.
Toplady then wrote Rock of Ages
in 1775 to conclude a magazine
article in which he emphasised
just as England could never repay
its national debt, so humans
thro their own efforts could never
satisfy the eternal justice of God.

Lord, we trust You our solid rock:
Let all that I am wait quietly
before God, for my hope is in him.
He alone is my rock and my
salvation, my fortress where I will
not be shaken. My victory and
honour come from God alone.
He is my refuge, a rock where
no enemy can reach me. Trust
in Him at all times,u people; pour
out your heart before him; God
is a refuge for us (Psa 62:5-8).

Lord, I lift my eyes to U, my rock,
my salvation, my fortress and
my refuge. Quiet my heart to wait
on you, for my hope is in you.
Help me to wait for U in the storm
and in the darkness. Let my confidence not be shaken by what circumstances may say or
my mind may think. Thank you
that my confidence rests on
the One who is the rock and
that You will never be shaken.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side
which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save fr wrath & make me pure.

Could my tears forever flow,
Could my zeal no languor know,
These for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
In my hand no price I bring;
Simply to Thy cross I cling.
