Just As I Am
Backgrounder: Charlotte Elliott
in her early thirties suffered
a serious illness that left her
weak and depressed. During
her illness a minister Dr Caesar
Malan visited her. Noting her
depression he asked if she had
peace with God. She resented
the question and said she did not
want to talk about it. But a few
days later she went to apologise
to Dr Malan, saying she wanted
to clean up some things in her
life before becoming a Christian.
Malan answered: Come just as
you are. That was enough for
Charlotte Elliott and she yielded
herself to the Lord that day.
14 years later, remembering
those words spoken to her
by Caesar Malan in Brighton
England, she wrote this hymn.
Lord, we come as we are:
Jesus replied: I am the bread
of life. Whoever comes to me
will never be hungry again.
Whoever believes in me will
never be thirsty… Those
the Father has given me will
come to me, and I will never
reject them (John 6:35, 37).
Merciful Father, you heard the
prayers of your people in the
wilderness and fed them bread
from heaven despite their sin.
Graciously hear us today and
feed us too with the Bread of Life
from heaven, even Lord Jesus.
Forgive us for elevating earthly
appetites above devotion to you.
Feed us with the knowledge
of Christ so that we recognise
our sin and repent in his name.
Have mercy on those whose lives
broken by violence & meet their
needs for food, water and shelter.
Heal those who are sick & I pray
particularly for my sister Bebe.
Meet the needs of those we know
personally to be in want & whom
we name silently in our hearts…
Thank U for your lovingkindness
and we ask You also meet our
needs even as we Come to you!
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me
And that Thou bidds’t me
come to Thee,
O Lamb of God I come! I come!
Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can
cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God I come! I come!
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon,
cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God I come! I come!
