Thought for the Week: Matt 24/28

Christ Gives Great Commission

Herod’s magnificent temple sets
the stage for Jesus’ Olivet Discourse,
a prophetic look at future events.
His followers are urged to watchful
expectation with faithful service
ahead of the return of Christ.
The events in the final two days of
Jesus’ earthly life carry shadows of
the cross: the anointing in Bethany,
the Passover Observance, Lord’s
Supper, the prayer in Gethsemane.
Jesus is arrested, tried, condemned
executed and placed in a tomb. But
in triumph, Jesus comes forth from
the grave in resurrection power.
The Kings of the Jews Lives again,
a message which His followers
are commissioned to share.

Lord, we’ll Do Your Assignment:
And there will be famines, pestilences
and earthquakes in various places…
And… lawlessness will abound…
And this gospel of the kingdom
will be preached in all the world…
and then the end will come…
Immediately after the tribulation…
the sun will be darkened… Then…
they will see Son of Man Coming
on the clouds (Matt 24:7-14, 29-30).
Then the eleven disciples went to the mountain which Jesus had appointed.
And Jesus came to them and said:
Go and make disciples of all the
nations… teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you;
and lo I am with you always, even
to the end of the age (Mt 28:16-20)

Lord, help us Keep Watch and
Be Ready for Your sure return
so that we may be able to give an
account of ourselves at any time.
Help us declare the word of t Lord
for righteousness being restored.
These are the days of the harvest,
The fields are as white in Yr world.
We are the labourers in Yr vineyard
Declaring the word of t Lord! Amen

Lord, there is no doubt about
the task You had left for us to do.
Help me step out of comfort zone
to find people who need to know U.
Help me witness to the people You
hv placed in my sphere of influence
Help me in my concern for the lost,
in words, deeds and attitudes.
Help me make disciples for Christ to
be like Him & further His Kingdom.
And Help me reflect as one who
has found the answer to life. Amen.

Lord, it’s easy to look at others and
think that I have nothing to offer.
But You have implanted passion
within me and blessed me with gifts
and talents that the world needs.
Help me to see where You God are
at work & watch for opportunities to
join U by sowing seeds of kindness.
Help those seeds to grow & flourish
and thank You for reaping a good
harvest. In Jesus’ precious name.

Reflection on Matthew

Knowing God thru His Names

The purpose of the Gospel according
to Matthew is to prove that Jesus
is the Messiah, the eternal King.
This week we understand God better
thru knowing His attributes, mostly
related to His ability to meet needs.
On Monday, we learn from
Matt 11 about Friend of Sinners.
On Tues, we learn from Mt13 about
God who Reveals kingdom secrets.
On Wednesday, we learn from Mt 14
about Son of God who Saves Me.
On Thursday, we learn from Mt 17
about God of the Impossible.
On Friday, we learn from Matt 24/28
about Christ Gives Great Commissn.
Let us humble ourselves and pray
and seek His face…In Jesus’ name.

Being Ready for Day of the Lord

Paul begins his second letter to the
Thessalonians by commending them for their faithfulness in the midst
of persecution and by encouraging them that present suffering will be
repaid with future glory. Paul also
deals with a misunderstanding concerning the Day of the Lord.
That day had not yet arrived, and
Paul recounts the events which
must take place first. Labouring
for the gospel, rather than lazing is
the proper response to such truth.

No one knows the time of Christ’s
return; and we’re to live moral and
holy lives, and not neglecting our
responsibilities to please the Lord.
Dear Lord, we are inspired by
the Thessalonian church for
their faithfulness in the midst
of persecution and suffering.
Help us be watchful, persevere and
never be tired of working for Christ.
Help us Mature In Holiness;
Help us Share the Gospel; and
Help us Love You more. Amen.

Lord, we purpose to Be Holy:
God chose you for salvation
through the Sanctifying work
of the Spirit and through belief
in the truth… Therefore stand fast
and hold the traditions which you
were taught. Now may our Lord
Jesus Himself..comfort your hearts
and establish you in every good
word and work (2 Thess 2:13-17).
Lord, we praise You for Your
holiness and Your perfection.
Thank You for the promise to
help us live holy life through
the sanctifying work of the Spirit.
And I choose to trust that You
Lord already see me as holy
and Your work in my life will help
me Mature In Holiness. Amen.

Lord, we will Share the Gospel:
Finally brothers pray for us that
the message of the Lord may
spread rapidly and be honoured,
just as it was with you (2Thess 3:1)
Lord, help me share the good news
of salvation thru Christ to others.
Equip me with the right words at
the right time, so that those hearts
are ready will be drawn toward You.
I also pray for people who need
the good news, that their hearts
would be open to receive all
that You have for them. Amen.

Lord, we purpose to Love You:
May the Lord lead your hearts
into a full understanding and
expression of the love of God
and the patience endurance that comes from Christ (2Thess 3:5).
Lord, I choose to love You with
all my heart, with all my soul, with
all my mind & with all my strength.
I love You Lord because You are
infinitely good, kind and worthy.
I ask that loving You would not
merely be an act of my will;
I ask that I would also feel the
emotion of being loved by You
and love for You. And lead my
heart into fuller understanding of
Your love so that You can express
Your love through me. Amen.

Be Strengthened in Day of the Lord

Paul begins his second letter to the
Thessalonians by commending them for their faithfulness in the midst
of persecution and by encouraging them that present suffering will be
repaid with future glory. Paul also
deals with a misunderstanding concerning the Day of the Lord.
That day had not yet arrived, and
Paul recounts the events which
must take place first. Labouring
for the gospel, rather than lazing is
the proper response to such truth.

We… thank God always for you…
brethren… because your faith grows
exceedingly, and the love of every
one of you all abounds toward each
other… so that we ourselves boast
of you among the churches of God
for your patience and faith in all
your persecutions and tributions
that you endure (2Thess 1:3-4).
We keep on praying for you, that
our God will make you worthy of
the life to which He called you.
And we pray that God by His power
will fulfill all your good intentions
and faithful deeds. Then everyone
will give honour to… Lord Jesus
because of you (2Thess 1:11-12)

Lord, I lift up the needs of my
loved ones and friends to You.
Meet their physical and obvious
needs; meet their emotional and
less obvious needs; and also meet
their spiritual and ultimate needs.
Cause their faith to grow so that
they would fear You; and create
in them a desire to love others.
And help me to point them to You
in my words and in my life. Amen.

Lord, grateful efficacy in Your calling
does not depend on our abilities.
In Your grace, impart Your power
to me so that I may live the life
to which You have called me.
Make me a vessel of Your glory
so that those who see my works
will look past me and be drawn
to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, forgive us from focusing
on temporal matters in our prayers.
While we know that You are about
every area of our lives, we do
not want to neglect praying for
the things that are most important
to You and the things that will
bring us lasting joy and honour.
So we ask You Lord the power
to accomplish all the good things
faith prompts us to do, so that the
name of the Lord be honoured. Amen

Knowing God In Matthew 17

God of the Impossible (July 1)

Mathew records many crucial
incidents from Jesus’ life in M16-19.
Though Christ takes time to heal
an epileptic boy, pay His temple
tax and confront hostile Pharisees,
His key concern is for His disciples
to continue the work He had begun.
Healings and discourses, miracles
and parables all focus on Jesus’
faithful followers to prepare them
for the difficult days just ahead.

Lord, we’ll Exercise Faith In You:
The disciples asked Jesus
privately: Why couldn’t we
cast out that boy’s demon?
So Jesus said to them: Because
of your unbelief; for assuredly
I say to you, if you Have Faith
as a mustard seed, you will say
to this mountain: Move from here
to there, and it will move; and
nothing will be impossible for you.
But this kind does not go except
by prayer & fasting (Mt 17:19-21)

Lord, although circumstances
seem challenging, yet You
are the source of my strength.
Although my faith seems small,
yet when placed in the Creator’s
hands, it can produce a greater harvest than I could ever imagine.
Lord, take my tiny seed of faith
and multiply it with Your strength.
Thank You for assuring me that nothing is impossible with You. Amen.

Lord, You promise that With Faith
In You Nothing Is Impossible.
Thank You for being the God
of the possible; for You are the
Almighty who moves mountains.
Help me to remember that
my faith, even though small
and weak, can do great things.
For it’s not the amount of faith but
the Focus of the faith in You. Amen

Lord, we want to boost kingdom
growth by sharing the gospel as it’s
more valuable than anything else.
We purpose to regularly spend
time alone with You, to know
You more and to seek Your will.
Help us to pray in faith trusting
You Lord to do the impossible and
be wary of the spirit of unbelief.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Knowing God In Matthew 14

Son of God who Saves Me (Jun 30)

A turning point in Matthew’s gospel
occurs in chap 12 where mounting
antagonism by the Jewish religious
leaders erupts into open denunciatn
of Jesus. Because of their hard-
hearted rejection, Jesus begins
to speak to them in parables and
explained only to the disciples.
After a rude reception in Nazareth,
Jesus withdraws across the Sea of
Galilee to the regions of Tyre & Sidon
in order to escape growing oppositn.
There, Peter walking on the water,
becoming afraid, and cried to the
Lord to save him as he was sinking.

Lord Jesus, Your Love Lifted Me:
Peter said: Lord,if it’s You, command
me to come to You on the water.
So He said: Come. And when Peter
came out of the boat and walked on
the water to go to Jesus. But when
he saw the wind was boisterous,
he was afraid and, beginning to
sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’
Immediately Jesus reached out
His hand and caught him, and said
to him: O you of little faith, why did you doubt? And when they got into
the boat, the wind ceased. Then
those who were in the boat came
and worshiped Him, saying: Truly
You are the Son of God (Mt 14:28-33)

Lord, help me be like Peter, who
was the only one to react in faith
and thus experiencing Your power.
Realised that if we focus on the
waves of difficult circumstances
without looking to You Christ for
help, we too may despair and sink.
To maintain faith in the midst of
difficult situations, help us Lord
to keep our eyes on Christ rather
than on our inadequacies. Amen.

Lord, remember singing the hymn:
“Love Lifted Me” in my late teens
and through young adult years.
And now as going through senior
years, this hymnal song still just
rise from the deep of my heart.
Only Your Love Lord gives lasting
peace & reigns strong in my heart.
Help me to fix my eyes on You;
for You God remains in control,
even in the storms of life. Amen.

Lord God commanded His love
towards us that while we were
still sinners Jesus died for us.
That’s the love that lifted us.
Love especially the final verse:
Souls in danger look above
Jesus completely saves –
What hope and assurance!!
Love lifted me, Love lifted me
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me! Thank U Lord. Amen

Lord, All my heart to You I give,
ever to You I’ll cling
In Your blessèd presence live,
ever Your praises sing,
Love so mighty and so true,
merits my soul’s best songs,
Faithful, loving service too,
to You belongs.
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me!
Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me! Amen.

God who Reveals kingdom secrets

A turning point in Matthew’s gospel
occurs in chap 12 where mounting
antagonism by the Jewish religious
leaders erupts into open denunciatn
of Jesus. Because of their hard-
hearted rejection, Jesus begins
to speak to them in parables and
explained only to the disciples.
After a rude reception in His home
town of Nazareth, Jesus withdraws
across the Sea of Galilee to the
regions of Tyre and Sidon in order
to escape growing opposition.

Lord, we’ll Respond to Your Word:
(Jesus said): You are permitted
to understand the secrets of
the Kingdom of Heaven, but
others are not (Matthew 13:11).
That is why I use these parables,
for they look, but they don’t really
see. They hear, but they don’t
really listen or understand (v13).
The hearts of these people are
hardened & their ears cannot hear,
and they have closed their eyes –
so their eyes cannot see, and
their ears cannot hear, and
their hearts cannot understand,
and they cannot turn to me and
let me heal them (Matt 13:15).

Lord, help me to be a true seeker
to hear from the personal God.
Help me to have an open mind,
ever ready to listen to You and
to believe Your Word of truth.
Give me the heart that can hear
Your mysteries, understand them
and internalise Your eternal truths.
Help me root out any attitude that
might block my hearing You. Amen.

Lord, help me not to have attitude
of a skeptic that tries to find fault
and thus don’t have ears to hear.
Lord, You don’t want me to turn off
my brain; but neither do You want
me to reject any word from You
that doesn’t fit my logic of things.
I give You Lord the permission
to blow my mind with the things
You want to reveal to me. Amen.

Lord, where my heart hardened at
times, tell me I have turned You out.
For it’s tough to recognise hardness
in myself, and so I need to know.
Soften me up Lord, where there’s
any area of insensitivity in my life.
Draw me close; get my attention
and hold it. Heighten my spiritual
senses Lord to pick up even the
slightest whisper from You. Amen.

Knowing God In Matthew 11

Friend of Sinners (June 28)

Matthew shared ten miraclens in
Mt 8-11 to show Jesus’ power over
disease, nature & the spirit world.
Christ then bestows that same
power and authority on His chosen
apostles and sends them out
as ambassadors of the kingdom.
He first instructs them how to act,
then warns them of the dangers
they will face, as he calls them
to committed discipleship.

Lord, we receive Your Rest:
Jesus spoke to the crowds, “But to
what will I compare this generation?
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look,
a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors & sinners!'(Mt11:16-19)
Jesus said: Come To Me, all of you
who are weary and carry heavy
burdens, and I will give you Rest.
Take my yoke upon you. Let me
teach you, because I am Humble and
Gentle at heart, and you will Find
Rest for your souls. For my yoke
is easy to bear, and the burdens
I give you is light (Matt 11:28-30).

Lord, we tend to judge, dismiss and
reject people & we need Your help.
You Lord desire us to be free;
but we have our own prejudices.
Reveal where we are called
to be more free of prejudices.
Reveal who are the sinners
that we are called to befriend.
Grant us wisdom to interpret
the truth and the call to change.
Grant us freedom that opens us
to follow Christ more closely. Amen

Lord, thank You for Your offer
to carry my burdens for me.
I give them all to You and gladly
receive Your Rest that you give.
I place myself Under Your Yoke
to learn from You. Teach me
Your wisdom and help me to walk
in the ways You set before me.
Thank You for Your mercy and
love that invite me to live my life
Resting and trusting in You. Amen.

Lord Jesus, You promise that
those who are Humble will be
the greatest in Your kingdom.
Help me to be Humble like U that
will also be a delight to others.
And help me to accomplish
great things for Your kingdom.
Lord, thank You for dealing with
Your people Gently, even though
You are sovereign and supreme.
Help me be a person of principle
& strong faith, & yet Gentle. Amen

Thought for the Week: Matthew 6

God who is Our Provider

Jesus claimed to be the Messiah,
the king of the Jews. And Matthew
5 to 7 traditionally called the
Sermon on the Mount, essentially
presents His statement of heaven.
Relationship to God (rather than
adherence to ritual) and inward
attitude (not outward action)
become the focus of His message.

Lord, we Lift Up Our Needs to You:
Do not worry saying: What shall
we eat…or What shall we wear?
For the pagans run after these
things and Your Heavenly Father
Knows that You Need them. But
Seek First the Kingdom of God
and His righteousness, and all
these things will be given to you
as well. Therefore Do Not Worry
about tomorrow (Matt 6:31-34).

Lord, You promise and advise us
Not To Worry about basic needs
for You Will Provide them to us.
Grateful I don’t have to be consumed
with worry; but I can be consumed
with You Lord and Your kingdom.
For no need enters my life for
which You have already provided.
So, I choose to keep anxiety from
cluttering my heart and instead
let it be filled with You. Amen.

Lord, You are all-knowing and
therefore You Know all our needs.
Praise You for Knowing everything
about us and every detail of our
situation; for nothing surprises You.
For Your Word says You Know
our needs and Will Provide them.
And so we can live peacefully and
cheerfully each day when we keep
Your kingdom as key concern. Amen

Gracious Lord, Thanks for caring
for us, including being our Provider.
Help me to always Seek You First,
trust Your gracious promise and
keep from worrying about the future.
Give me Lord the right perspective
and not worry over issues beyond
my control. Help me to see the
difference between needs & wants.
And do transform my life. Amen.
