Prayer Thot for the Day (Jun 14)

Christ Wants You to Be Fruitful

Backgrounder on John 13-17:
The Upper Room Discourse
contains Jesus’ final words of
instruction and encouragement
to His disciples before his death.
Only John records these intimate
moments between Jesus and
His men as He models true
humility (Jn 13), describes the
coming Holy Spirit (Jn 14-16)
and intercedes for the unity and
protection of His disciples (Jn 17)

Lord, we want to Be Fruitful:
I am the vine; u are the branches.
If You Remain in me and I in you,
you will Bear Much Fruit; apart
from me you can do nothing…
If you remain in me and My Words
Remain in u, ask whatever you wish
and it Will Be Given you (Jn 15:5-7)
This is my commandment that you
love one another as I have loved u…
You are my friends If You Do what
I command. I no longer call you
servants… Instead I have called
you friends, for everything that
I learned from my Father I have
made known to you (v12-15) Amen Continue reading “Prayer Thot for the Day (Jun 14)”

Christ Gives You Peace

Backgrounder on John 13-17:
The Upper Room Discourse
contains Jesus’ final words of
instruction and encouragement
to His disciples before his death.
Only John records these intimate
moments between Jesus and
His men as He models true
humility (Jn 13), describes the
coming Holy Spirit (Jn 14-16)
and intercedes for the unity and
protection of His disciples (Jn 17)

Lord, we’ll Hold On to Your Peace:
These things I have spoken to
you while being present with you.
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send will
teach you all things; and bring to
your remembrance all things that
I said to you. Peace I leave with
you, and the peace I give isn’t
like the peace the world gives.
So don’t be troubled or afraid
(John 14:25-27). Amen. Continue reading “Prayer Thot for the Day (Jun 13)”

Prayer Thot for the Day (Nov 10)

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

Backgrounder: Edward Perronet
(1726-1792) was not an easy
person to get along with. After
being a minister in the Anglican
Church for some time, he became
fed up with what he felt was the
church’s “Nonsense” and joined
with the Wesleys. As a Methodist
he faced persecution. Perronet
soon broke with the Wesleys over
the issue of who could administer
the sacraments. He joined a group
called the Connexion but later
broke with then as well. It was
as this majestic hymn. Whether
Perronet intended or not,
the hymn points to the time all
believers in Christ- irregardless
of petty disagreements will join
together in a celestial chorus.

O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee

Backgrounder:Washington Gladden
believed that Christians should be
involved in the world’s problems.
A journalist turned clergyman,
he crusaded against injustice.
In his various church postings,
he often preached social gospel,
trying to rouse his congregation
to the social and labour problems
that were engulfing the country.
When Gladden wrote this hymn
in 1979, he said the poem
was an honest cry of human
need and the need for divine
companionship. If our friendship
with Jesus does not lead us to
concern for our fellowmen, then
we better check to see how closely
we are walking with the Master.

Hezekiah’s Reforms & Judah’s End
(Prayer Walk thro 2 Chron 29-36)

Backgrounder: Assyrian dispersion
of Israel has a profound Impact on
Judah. Inheriting a disorganised
country & a heavy tribute burden
to Assyria, Hezekiah in the very
first month of his administration
he repairs the Temple & restores
worship. But the final century of
Judah’s history is a bad dream.
After Manasseh’s 55-year reign
of terror and apostasy, even godly
reformer like Josiah is powerless
to prick the hearts of the people.
After his death the nation swiftly
returns to its abominable ways.
Eventually overthrown by the
Babylonians and city levelled, the
survivors are dragged to Babylon,
there to ponder their fate for 70
long years. But in the midst of
doom, King Cyrus of Persia issues
a decree: The house of the Lord
must be rebuilt in Jerusalem.
