Hearing God In Luke 6 (July 3)

Christ Urges Build Firm Foundation

Rejection in His hometown of
Nazareth causes Jesus to shift
to Capernaum where He ministers
for two years. There Christ calls
12 men to be His travelling
companions. And there by
the shores of Galilee He begin
to prepare them for ministry
He will soon entrust to them.

Lord,we purpose to Do What U Say:
Now it came to pass in those days
that He went out to the mountain
to Pray, and continued All Night In
Prayer to God. And when it was day,
He called His disciples to Himself &
fr them He chose twelve whom He
also named apostles (Luke 6:12-13).
Then He lifted up His eyes
towards His disciples and said:
Blessed are the poor, for yours is
the kingdom of God. Blessed are
you who hunger now, for you
shall be filled. Blessed are you
when men hate you… for the
Son of Man’s sake (Luke 6:20-22).
(Jesus said): Why do you call me
Lord, Lord, when you don’t do what
I say?… I will show you what it’s
like when someone comes to me,
listens to my teaching and then
follows it. It is like a person building
a house who digs deep and Lays
the Foundation on Solid Rock…
Anyone who hears and doesn’t obey
is like a person who builds a house
without a foundation (Lk 6:46-49).

Lord, we realise because of the
importance of the choice of the
Twelve disciples, You spent the
whole night in prayer to the Father.
For our hearts the lesson is clear:
Because we dont know the effect
of major decisions, Much Prayer
is needed before the die is cast.
Help us Lord to be poor in spirit
in Seeking You so that we can
claim the kingdom of God. Amen.

Lord, my heart is already Yours
considering what You have done
and I surrender once again to You.
My heart wants to accept Your will
and to do what You want me to do.
But Lord, please share it with me
so clearly; for only then will I have
the confidence that You are with
me in the assignment and dare to
undertake it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, You are leading me to lay
down my life; and also promise
great blessings for doing so.
Lord, I have to accept Your words
don’t always make sense to me.
So I maybe afraid to follow some
of them fully; but I do trust that You
want my life to weather any storm.
Anchor me to the rock as I purpose
to follow You more closely. Amen.

Hearing God in Luke 5 (July 2)

Christ Cares for the Lost & Needy

Luke introduces the ministry of
Jesus with three preparatory events:
the ministry of His forerunner
John the Baptist, His baptism by
John and His temptation by Satan.
Rejection in His hometown of
Nazareth causes Jesus to move
to Capernaum where He ministers
for two years. There Christ calls
12 men to be His companions.
And there by the shores of Galilee
He prepare the twelve for ministry
He will soon entrust to them.

Lord, You Care for the Lost & Needy:
Jesus said: Now go out where
it is deeper & let down your nets.
Simon answered: Master, we have
worked hard all night and haven’t
caught anything. But because
you say so, I will let down the nets.
When they had done so, they
caught such a large number of fish…
Then Jesus said to Simon: From now
on You will catch men (Lk 5:4-10)
Later… Jesus saw a tax collector
named Levi sitting at his tax
collector’s booth. Follow me and
be my disciple, Jesus said to him.
So Levi got up, left everything,
and followed Him (Luke 5:27-28).
Healthy people don’t need a doctor
– sick people do. I have come to
call sinners to turn from their sins,
not to spend my time with those
who think they are already
good enough (Luke 5:31-32).

Lord, let us learn from Simon Peter
where Obedience to Your voice
opens our lives to Your miraculous
work and receive Your blessing.
Open our ears Lord to hear Your
voice in our current circumstance;
and spur us to respond positively.
Help us learn from the prophet
Samuel and say with him: Speak
for Your servants are listening. Amen

Lord, sometimes when we look at
someone, all we can see is who he
is now & his need for huge change.
But Lord You’re indeed all-powerful
and Your call can be transformative.
Help us Lord to befriend sinners,
and give us heart of compassion
for those hurting and lost in sin.
And help us reach out to them
effectively in time of opening. Amen

Lord, thank You for shedding light
to show us that we need You the
Great Physician to heal our wounds.
Thank You Lord for calling us to
repent and come to You; and for
Your tender mercies in our lives.
Grant us Lord Your heart for those
who are hurting, sick and lost in sin;
just as Your heart reaches out to us
in our time of greatest need. Amen.

Living By God’s Word & Serving Him

Luke introduces the ministry of
Jesus with His baptism by John
the Baptist & temptation by Satan.
Christ’s genealogy ties Him to
David the king, Abraham the
patriarch and Adam the first man.
Rejection in His hometown of
Nazareth causes Him to shift to
Capernaum where He ministers
for two years. There Christ calls
12 men calls 12 men to be His
travelling companions. And there
by the shores of Galilee He begin
to prepare them for ministry
He will soon entrust to them.

Lord, we’ll live by Yr Word & serve U:
Jesus was led by the Spirit in
the desert, where for 40 days he
was tempted by the devil. He ate
nothing those days and was hungry.
The devil said to him: If you are
the Son of God, tell this stone to
become bread. Jesus answered:
It is written: Man does not live
on bread alone, but by every
word of God. (Luke 4:1-4).
Then the devil, taking Him up on
a high mountain, showing Him all
the kingdoms… And the devil said:
If You worship me, all will be Yours.
And Jesus answered: It is written
You shall worship the Lord your God
and Him only you shall serve (v5-8).
Jesus came into synagogue & said:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
to preach the gospel to the poor,
to heal the broken-hearted…
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those oppressed,
to proclaim the acceptable year
of the Lord (Luke 4:16-19).

Lord, the enemy is strong and
sinister; but You are stronger.
Grant us the grace to recognise
the attacks of the enemy and
the strength to spurn his offers.
Knowing Your word is an effective
weapon against wily temptation.
Help us use Your word effectively,
have the faith in Your promises
and the grit to be steadfast. Amen.

Loving Lord, in gratitude of Your
great mercies, we offer our bodies
as living sacrifice to please You.
Help us Lord to always remember
to worship You our Creator God;
and serve only You; with single-
heartedness and wholeheartedly.
When temptation comes my way,
give me the strength to resist
and turn away from anything
that goes against Your will. Amen.

Lord, we realise there will be
pressures & temptations of life.
Help us to Serve Your purpose
by increasing our faith in You.
Help us to be Obedient to Your will,
while fulfilling our responsibilities.
Help us to Resist the devil by
knowing & obeying God’s Word
And grant us faith to stand firm.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God Overcomes the Impossible

Dr Luke – physician, historian and
writer of the longest gospel account
clearly states his purpose for writing
in the opening verses of his book.
That thou might know the certainty
of those things thou has instructed
(1:4). He begins with the details
surrounding the miraculous birth
of two remarkable boys: John the
forerunner, and Jesus the Messiah.

Lord, we will Believe Your Word:
The angel said: Do Not be afraid,
Zacharias, for your prayer is heard;
your wife will bear you a son,
and you shall call his name John…
But behold you will be mute
until the day these things take place
because u did Not Believe my words
which will be fulfilled (Luke 1:13-20).
The angel said: Behold you will
conceive in your womb and bring
forth a Son and shall call His name
Jesus… For with God nothing
will be impossible. Then Mary
said… Let It Be to me According
To Your Word (Luke 1:31-38).
You are Blessed Because You
Believed what the Lord would do
what He said… And Mary said:
My soul magnified the Lord…
For He has regarded the lowly…
For He who is mighty has done
great things for me (v45-49).

Lord, there’s adversity that lasted so
long that they seems impossibilities.
But then when the Almighty God
is involved, nothing is impossible.
For nothing is too difficult for You
as You work in impossible situations
where Yr power are clearly shown.
Help us Lord not be discouraged
by Long unyielding situations.
Help us to endure the long period
requiring both faith and patience.
Help us Lord to Wait and Believe for
nothing is impossible with U. Amen.

Lord, even when things just does
not make any sense, remind me
Your Word is the ultimate truth.
Even when my faith is weak and
hidden, Your word of promise can
sinply bring it to pass out of hiding.
So I embrace Lord Your promises
though they may seem impossible.     For You are the God who can create
new things out of nothing. Amen.

Lord, help me not to focus on the
problem & be afraid like Zacharias;
but instead learn from Mary to take   courage focusing solely on You.
I embrace Lord Your promise like
Mary and rest on Your sure word.                 For after all You are the God of
the impossible and I rest in You.
And Lord I look forward to receive
the blessing through Believing You
and Be Complete In You. Amen.

Reflection on Five Books of Poetry

Hearing God thru His Word (Jun 30)

The path to intentional discipleship
is to grow towards spiritual maturity
by nurturing key disciple attitudes.
So for past three years, we had been
Seeking God thru Biblical Prayers;
Trusting God thru His Promises and
Adoring God thru Thanks & Praise.
And for the past six months; we’ve
been Hearing God thru His Word.

“God Is Not Silent. It is the nature
of God to speak, writes AW Tozer.
We could spend the rest of our lives
learning to recognise God’s voice.
We can be certain if we seek Him,
He will make Himself available to us.
If we listen, He will speak; and if we
believe what we have heard, He will
show us more! The God who speaks
is always seeking to take us deeper
into His Will & draw us closer to Him.

Henry Blackaby in his workbook
Experiencing God says God Speaks
by the Holy Spirit through the Word,
Circumstances and His Church.
In this current series, we will be
focussing on Hearing God through
His Word; but needless to say
we will also see God speaking
thru circumstances, the church
and many other ways. May God
bless our desire to hear Him. Amen.

We are meditating through the Bible,
which is organised by genres:
Laws, History, Poetry and Prophets…
Before we continue into Prophets
for variety sake we will have the
third Gospel interlude in Luke.
But here’s the key thoughts from
over the last nine weeks from five
books of Poetry; which generally
encourage us to seek God; with
Psalms in particular expressing
praise, worship & confession to God.

Thought for the Week: Eccl 3

God Had A Time For Every Purpose

Making sense out of life is not easy.
And this is the problem facing the
preacher as he thinks through what
he has seen and experienced in life.
Every thing he has undertaken
from acquiring wisdom to amassing
wealth has ended in emptiness.
In a sudden burst of emotion the
preacher realises God does indeed
appoint the Times & purposes of life.

Lord, we will Wait for Your Timing:
For everything there is a season,
a Time for every purpose
under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
A time to be born & a time to die…
A time to weep & a time to laugh…
A time to keep and a time to
throw away… A time to keep
Silence and a time to Speak (v2-7).
He has made everything beautiful
in its time. He has also set eternity
in the hearts of men; yet they
can’t fathom what God has done
from beginning to end… There is
nothing better for men than to be
happy and do good while they live.
That everyone may eat and drink
and find satisfaction in all his toil
– this is the gift of God (v11-13).

Lord, You’re sovereign & do things
at Your Time to achieve Your plan,
including moulding our character.
Pray Lord for needed grace not to
extend the gruelling waiting time.
Enable me to recognise inner flaws;
and in Your mercy, remove defects
that keep me trapped in self will.
Grant me a character makeover so
that I can represent You well. Amen.

Lord, as human beings, we have a
keen sense of having the right time
in sharing advice or exciting news.
But when it comes to talking to God,
we tend to expect You to answer our
prayers or reveal Yr Will right away.
Waiting is hard & we don’t know how
to interpret rhythm of our dialogue.
Grant us Lord the patience to wait
and watch for Your words. Amen.

Lord, I realise that Your Timing
for things is not the same as mine.
I tend to desire all the answers to
prayers quickly; but You want me
to be very patient and wait on You.
So I lay my concerns before You
& leave the outcome in Your hands.
Help me to rest in the knowledge
that Your Timing is perfect, just as
everything You do is perfect. Amen.

Reflection on Ecclesiastes

Hearing God thru His Word

A king of worldwide acclaim and
legendary wealth, Solomon had
every opportunity to examine life
in all its complexities. Ecclesiastes
is the inspired record of his
intense search to find meaning
& satisfaction on earth. His search
yields the conclusion that apart
from God, all of life is “vanity”
-hopeless futility. Power, prestige
pleasure; nothing can fill the God-
shaped void in the human heart.
Ultimate satisfaction comes only
when we fear, honour and obey God.

On Monday, we learn fr Eccl 3 that
God Has A Time for Every Purpose.
On Tuesday, we learn from Eccl 4
that God Is the Best Companion.
On Wed, we learn from Eccl 5 to
Thank God for Work & Retirement.
On Thursday we learn from Eccl 8
to Be Discerning and Be Diligent.
On Friday, we learn fr Eccl 9 that
God Desires Us Make Most of Life.
On Sat, we learn from Eccl 12 that
God Urges: Remember & Fear Him.

Let us humble ourselves and pray
and seek His face. Help us O God
be Christ’s disciples who Hear You:
For God has Time for Every Purpose
& Want us Be Discerning & Diligent.
For You are Best Companion & we
Thank You for Work & Retirement.
For You Desire Us Make Most of Life
as well as to Remember & Fear Him.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Hearing God In Eccl 12 (Jun 28)

God Urges: Remember & Fear Him

Thus far the preacher has been
concentrating mainly on problems
of life without seeking explanation.
But the deeper he probes life’s
patterns and perplexities, the more
conclusive becomes the evidence
that points him to the solution:
and that is Fear God. When wisdom
turns to vanity, fear God (Eccl 7:18).
When God’s ways seem uncertain,
fear God (8:12-13). When all is
said and done, fear God (12:13),
for this is the whole duty of man.

Lord, we’ll Remember & Fear You:
Remember now your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the difficult days come…
Your limbs will tremble with age,
and your strong legs will grow
weak. Your teeth will be too few
to do their work (Eccl 12:1-3).
Remember your Creator (now)
before the silver cord of life snaps…
For then the dust will return to
the earth, and the spirit will return
to God who give it (Ecc 12:6-7).
Let us hear the conclusion of
the whole matter: Fear God
and keep His commandments,
for this is man’s all. For God will
bring every work into judgment,
including every secret thing,
whether good or evil (Ecc 12:13–14).

Father God, we acknowledge that
You are our Creator & source of life.
Help us remember You in days of
vitality, before the light of life fades.
We recognize the brevity of life and
the certainty of returning to the
dust from which we were made.
Grant us the wisdom to live each
day with purpose and intention.
Help us cherish the days of strength
to serve You and love others. Amen.

Lord, guide us as we navigate the
challenges and opportunities of life. Strengthen our resolve to resist
temptation & to walk in Your paths.
As the silver cord of life is loosened,
may we face it with hope and peace,
knowing our spirit will return to You.
We thank You for grace and mercy,
and we commit our lives to You,
today and always. In Jesus’ name.

Lord, Thank You for Ecclesiastes
that gives advice on living a full life.
For we want to ensure all we have
worked for hasn’t been a mistake.
For ultimately everyone’s duty is to
Fear God & keep Your commands.
For one day we will have to give an
account of how we lived our lives.
Grant us grace Lord to keep Your
values and priorities in line. Amen.

Hearing God In Eccl 9 (Jun 27)

God Desires Us Make Most of Life

Backgrounder to Ecclesiastes 7-12:
Thus far the preacher has been
concentrating mainly on problems
of life without seeking explanation.
But the deeper he probes life’s
patterns and perplexities, the more
conclusive becomes the evidence
that points him to the solution:
and that is Fear God. When wisdom
turns to vanity, fear God (Eccl 7:18).
When God’s ways seem uncertain,
fear God (8:12-13). When all is
said and done, fear God (12:13),
for this is the whole duty of man.

Lord, we’ll Make the Most of Life:
Go, Eat your bread with joy, and
drink your wine with a cheerful
heart; for God has already
accepted your works. Let your
garments be always white (with
purity) and let your head not lack
(the) oil (of gladness) (Ecc 9:7-8).
Whatever your hand finds to do,
do it with (all) Your might; for
there is no work…in the grave(v10)
The race is not to the swift,
nor the battle to the strong…
nor riches to men of understanding,
nor favour to men of skill;
but time and chance happens
to them all (Ecclesiastes 9:11).

Lord, thanks for the gift of working
& for the blessings You’ve bestowed
upon my brethren and their families.
Impress on them O Holy Spirit to go
forth with gladness in their hearts.
May they enjoy their meals and time
of joy together, knowing that You’ve
approved and blessed their efforts.
Grant them a grateful heart & help
them recognize Yr hand in their lives.
May they express gratitude for all
that they have. In Jesus’ name,Amen

Lord, Give me strength and ability
to work with all my might on all
that You have assigned me to do.
Use up Lord my full capacity for
Your glory while I am here on earth.
Give me Lord eternal perspective
on how I invest my time each day.
Keep me from wasting opportunities
You give me this week to share You
with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, I realise that the race of
faith is not a short sprint but rather
a long race that requires endurance.
And Ecclesiastes 9:11 wisely points
out the race is not to the swift, nor
the battle to the strong. So Lord,
help me to press on and lay aside
every weight to finish well the race.
And grant me strength so that I can
run the race with endurance. Amen.
