Reflection on Psalms Book Five

Hearing God Through His Word

i’m Psalms Book Five (Ps 107 to 150)
mainly written by David is similar
to the book of Deuteronomy.
Just as Deuteronomy touches on
God & His Word, these psalms are
anthems of praise & thanksgiving
for God and His Word. Most of
the psalms were originally set
to music and used in worship.
We can use these psalms today
as were used in the past, as a
hymnbook of praise and worship.
This is a book that ought to make
our hearts adore & sing to the Lord.

On Monday, we learn from Ps 107
that God Helps His People.
On Tue, we learn from Ps 108/109
that God Is Faithful & Merciful.
On Wed, we learn from Ps 116/118
that God Listens & Answers Prayers.
On Thursday we learn from Ps 119
that God’s Word Provides Direction.
On Friday, we learn from Ps 139 that
God Knows & Cares For His People.
On Saturday, we learn from Ps 144
that God Brings Us Thru Trouble.

Let us humble ourselves and pray
and seek His face. Help us O God
be Christ’s disciples who Hear You:
For God Helps His People; and
that He Is Faithful and Merciful.
For God Listens & Answers Prayers
& that His Word Provides Direction.
For God Knows & Cares For His Pple
& that He Brings Us Thru Trouble.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Hearing God In Psalm 144 (Jun 14)

God Brings Us Through Trouble

Backgrounder on Psalms 140-145:
Your enemies will either drive you
from God or drive you to God.
In David’s hour of need he found
a sure Refuge (Ps 140, Ps 142),
a trustworthy Friend (Ps 141),
a listening Ear (Ps 143),
a Strong Arm (Ps 144),
a merciful King (Ps 145);
and You Can Too !! Amen.

Lord, You Bring Us Thru Trouble:
Bless the Lord, who is my rock.
He Gives Me Strength… He is
my loving ally and my fortress,
my Stronghold, my deliverer.
He stands before me as a Shield,
& I Take Refuge in Him (Ps 144:1-2)
O Lord, what are mortals that You
should notice us, mere mortals
that You should care for us ?
For… our days are like a passing
shadow. Bend down the heavens,
Lord and Come Down (v3-5).
Rescue me and deliver me from…
(those who) speaks lying words…
That our barns may be full,
supplying all kinds of produce…
Happy are the people who are in
such a state; happy are the people
whose God is the Lord (v11-15).

Father God, I am Your child; and
Nothing can separate me from
Your love. You are my Loving Ally;
and You’re my hero with strong arm.
You are my solid Rock of safety,
my impregnable Fortress and
unconquerable Stronghold.
And You Lord will Shield me
whenever I Take Refuge in You.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Lord Jesus, we praise You for
Coming to earth so that we who
believe in You may know Your
forgiveness & experience Yr love.
You are Emmanuel God with us!
Altho as mere humans our days
are just like a passing shadow,
yet You Come Down from high
and brought us out of darkness
into Your marvelous light. Amen.

Lord, my storage places will be
full of provisions; and my produce
increases steadily and continually.
And I am securely under Your
blanket of covering; and so there
can be no breaching of my walls.
My heavenly Father is the Lord
of Hosts; and under His provision
and protection, I shall remain safe,
healthy and happy all my life. Amen.

Hearing God In Psalm 139 (Jun 13)

God Knows & Cares for His People

In 1936, at the age of twenty-four,
evangelist Edwin Orr wrote the
moving hymn: Search Me O God
during an Easter evangelistic
campaign in New Zealand. During
that campaign, revival fell on the
people of New Zealand. As Orr
was about to leave New Zealand,
four Maori girls came and sang
him their native song of farewell.
Impressed by the tune and still
stirred by the revival he witnessed,
Orr scribbled the stanzas of the
hymn on the back of an envelope
as he waited in an NZ post office.
Search Me O God was inspired
by Psalm 139; which is about the
infinite knowledge & unceasing
presence of the almighty God.

O Lord, You have searched
me and You know me…
You perceive my thots from afar…
You are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
You know it completely (Ps 139:1-4)
Where can I free from Yr Presence?
If I go to the heavens, You’re there;
If I settle on the far side of the
sea, even there Your hand will
Guide and Hold me fast (v7-10).
Search me O God, and know
my heart; test me and know my
anxious thoughts. See if there is
any offensive way in me, and lead
me in the way everlasting (v23-24)

Lord, thankful You know every-
thung about me and still love me.
You know my thoughts & mistakes
and yet You still call me Yours.
Thank You that You are always
with me; teaching and guiding me,
comforting and restoring me;
Lord, You know me better than
I know myself; and in response
help me know U better too. Amen.

Lord, praise You for Your omni-
presence and good plans for me.
You promise in Your Word that I can
never get away from Your presence.
Wherever You take me each day,
Guide me with Your hand, and
Support me with Your strength.
Grateful for Your abiding care; for
apart from You I can do nothing.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Search me O God and know my
heart today; Try me O Saviour,
know my thoughts I pray.
See if there be some wicked
way in me; Cleanse me from
every sin, and set me free…
Take Lord my life, and make it
wholly Thine; Fill my poor heart
with Thy great love divine.
Take all my will, my passion,
self and pride; I now surrender
Lord – in me abide. Amen !!

Hearing God In Psalm 119 (Jun 12)

God’s Word Provides Direction

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm
and the longest chapter of
the longest book in the Bible.
And through its 176 verses,
it provides the multifaceted
Word of God. And it also inspired
Amy Grant & Michael Smith to write
the hymnal song ‘Thy Word’ in 1984.
Michael came up with the melody &
some words for the chorus straight
from David’s Psalm about being
a light into my path. But as Michael
had no idea what the verses were
supposed to say, he gave it to
Amy and told her to finish the tune.
So that night she starts walking
back to her cabin,” Michael said.
Caribou Ranch is 8,000 acre and
it’s very dark, and she got lost.
“She finally saw a lamp & started
walking towards that light, didn’t
realize that that was her cabin.”
“And she walked into that little cabin
and wrote the verses to ‘Thy Word.’”

Lord, Your Word Directs Our Path:
How can a man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to
Your Word. With my whole heart
I have sought You. Oh let me not
wonder from Yr commandments.
Your Word I Have Hidden
in my heart that I might Not Sin
against You (Psalm 119:9-11).
Be good to your servant, that
I may live and obey Your Word.
Open My Eyes to see wonderful
truths in Yr instructions (v17-18).
Your Word is a lamp for my feet
and a Light for my Path. I have…
confirmed that I will keep Your
righteous (laws). I am afflicted
very muvh; Revive me O Lord
according to Your Word (v105-7).

Lord, even as I Hide Your Word in
my heart, help me Keep From Sin.
Grant me the wisdom to seek You
and to Hide Your Word in my heart.
Grant me discernment to apply
Your truth to everyday situations.
Grant me the perseverance and
faith to trust Your Word especially
when l’m going thru difficult times.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Lord, Open our eyes and grant us
wisdom to See and understand
the Wonderful Truths in Your law.
Help us not take Your Word
for granted; but instead help us
to meditate on it day and night.
Lord, may the hymn: “Open My
Eyes and Let Me See” spur me to
be watchful & listen to Your Spirit.
And then proceed to go act
on what I have seen and heard,
and sharing it with others. Amen.

Lord, we thank You that Your
Word lights the path at our feet
so that we don’t have to wander
in the wilderness. Thank You that
Yr Word acts as spiritual compass
to guide and direct our paths.
Help us Lord to remember that we
can always count on Your Word
to guide, lead and keep us on
the right track. And Revive us Lord
according to Your Word. Amen.

Hearing God In Ps 116/118 (June 11)

God Listens & Answers Prayers

Backgrounder on Psalms 111-118:
 Praise permeates nearly every
line of these eight psalms.
God is praiseworthy for
His care of us (Psalm 111),
His commandments (Ps 112),
His glorious name (Ps 113),
His mighty power (Ps 114)
His uniqueness (Psalm 115),
His deliverance (Psalm 116),
His truth (Psalm 117) and
His tender mercy (Ps 118).
What other response could there
be thankful to Praise the Lord.

Lord, You Hear & Answer Prayers:
I love the Lord, for He Heard
my voice; He Heard my cry
for mercy. Because He turned
His ear to me, I will call on Him
as long as I live (Psalm 116:1-2).
The Lord is gracious & righteous;
our God is full of Compassion…
Be at rest… O my soul, for
the Lord has been good to you…
I believe in You, so I prayed, (for)
I am deeply troubled Lord (v5-7,10).
In my distress I prayed to the
Lord and the Lord answered me
and rescued me. The Lord is
On My Side, I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
Yes, the Lord is For me;
He will help me (Ps 118:5-7).

Father God, I take great comfort
in knowing You Hear my prayers.
Your Word tells me You Listen
and Hear when I Call upon You.
Help me Lord to trust You
enough to Pray for all the things
that are of concerns to me.
Help me Lord to be patient to wait
for Your answers, not lose heart and
not fear You’ve never heard. Amen.

Father, You take care of us for You
are merciful & Full of Compassion.
You are Good to Your children,
and taking care of our every need.
Although You are righteous; Thank
You Lord for not treating me as
I deserve; for You’re also Gracious.
Enable me in tough time to fix my
mind on Your record of kindness.
Increase my faith in the power of
Prayer to You when troubled. Amen.

Father God, as Your child, Nothing
can separate me from Your love.
Thank You Lord for Answering
and helping me in my distresses.
Thank You Lord for the truth
that You Are For me, and it is
assuring of Your concern for me.
Help me to resolve Not Be Afraid
because the Almighty Lord of the
universe Is On My Side. Amen.

Hearing God In Psalm 108/109

God Is Faithful & Merciful

There is plenty to sing about in
Ps 107-110. First comes the song
of the Redeemed (Ps 107), then
a song dedicated to the God of
might & glory (Ps 108) and a song
of lament over the slanderous
attacks of an enemy (Ps 109).
But how can you sing when the
godless are seemingly getting
away with murder? Remember
with the psalmist David that
the Lord is king (Psalm 110).

Lord, You are Faithful & Merciful:
I will Praise You, O Lord, among
the Peoples and I will sing praises
to You among the nations.
For Your mercy is great above
the heavens, and Your Faithfulness
reaches to the clouds. Be exalted
O God above the heavens, and Your
glory above all the earth(Ps 108:3-5)
O God the Lord deal with me
for Your name’s sake; because
Your mercy is good, deliver me.
For I am poor & needy(Ps109:21-22)
Help me O Lord my God…
Save me according to Your mercy,
that they may know that this
is Your hand- that You, Lord,
have done it (Ps 109:26-27).

Lord, as Your unfailing love
is higher than the mountains
and Your Faithfulness reaches
to the clouds, surely You promise
to be Faithful to Your people.
I surrender my fears to You and
trust in You to see me through.
Grant me Lord the grace to praise
and Exalt You, even as I witness
Your Glorious manifestation. Amen

Sovereign Lord, I ask for Your help
not just for my sake, but also for
the sake of Your glorious name.
Your lovingkindness is good
and I also trust in Your mercy.
I am in great need of help Lord
and I cling to Your goodness.
In Your Mercy, Deliver me Lord
and heal my wounded heart.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen

Father God, I thank You for
Your mercy and lovingkindness.
I extol You Lord for You are
my strength and also because
You have become my salvation.
I can do nothing apart from You,
but I am confident in Your tender
mercy and Your faithfulness to me.
Help me & save me; according to
Your tender mercy. And I will testify:
Be exalted O God above the heavens
& Yr glory be over all the earth.Amen

Hearing God In Psalm 107 (Jun 9)

God Helps His People

There is plenty to sing about in
Ps 107-110. First comes the song
of the Redeemed (Ps 107), then
a song dedicated to the God of
might & glory (Ps 108) and a song
of lament over the slanderous
attacks of an enemy (Ps 109).
But how can you sing when the
godless are seemingly getting
away with murder? Remember
with the psalmist David that
the Lord is king (Psalm 110).

Lord, You Help Your People:
O give thanks to the Lord,
for He is good! For His mercy
endures forever. Let the redeemed
of the Lord say so (Ps 107:1-2).
Some wandered in the desert,
lost & homeless. Hungry & thirsty,
they nearly died. Lord, Help!
they Cried in their trouble and He
Rescued them from their distress…
Let them Praise the Lord for His
great love & for all His wonderful
deeds to them. For He satisfies
the longing soul, and fills the
hungry soul with goodness (v4-9).
Fools because of their transgression
were afflicted…Then they cried out
to the Lord in their trouble, and He
saved them out of their distresses.
And delivered them fr destructions.
Oh that men would give thanks to
the Lord for His goodness (v17-21).

Lord, I will recall all the ways
that You have been Good, and
Merciful to me. Remind me when
I forget Your gracious deeds.
Call Your work to my attention,
anchor it in my memory; and
I will recall & Cry to You for help.
Help me Lord trust that You will
come to my rescue; and I will
Praise Your love & mercy. Amen.

Lord, sometimes, life can seems
like one struggle after another.
When difficulties consume my thots
and I cannot see an end in sight,
help me Lord rely on Your promises.
When I’m faced with problems
I can’t solve, I can still Cry Out
to You for Help and You will answer.
Even when I’m wandering aimlessly
without any help in sight, You will
deliver me from my distress. Amen.

Lord, at times I am a Fool because
of transgressions and were afflicted.
Because of Your unfailing love, You
never give up on me but pursue me.
And when I cry out to You Again and
again, You offer grace and mercy.
Thank you Lord, for leading me
out of distress & darkness and
bringing me into Your light.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Thought for the Week: Psalm 91

God Shields & Cares For Us

Rev Stillman Marhad been invited
in 1904 to preach at a New York City
church a few hours away from home.
But his wife became ill that Sunday
morning, and he was about to
cancel his speaking engagement.
Then his young son spoke up:
Father, don’t you think that if God
wants you to preach today, He will
take care of mother while you are
away? Martin made the trip, and
when he returned home later that
day he found that his wife Civilla
had written this hymn in his absence
inspired by Psalm 91:1-2. That
evening he composed the music.

Lord, we will put Trust In You:
Those who live in the shelter
of the Most High will find rest
in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my
place of safety; he is my God,
and I trust him (Psa 91:1-2).
He shall cover you with His
feathers and under His wings
you shall take refuge. His truth
shall be your Shield…(Ps 91:4).
If you make the Lord your refuge,
if you make the Most High your
Shelter, no evil will conquer you…
He will Order His Angels to protect
you wherever you go (v9-11) Amen.

Lord, all Your promises are true
and Your children are held safe
in the palm of Your very hand.
We purpose to abide under the
Shadow of the Almighty, and trust
Your reliable refuge, safety shield
& ministering angels watch over us
and Protect us wherever we go.
We set our love on You, and we
can count Your loving care. Amen

Lord, Thank You that in the midst of
life’s storms, I have Your Protection
when I come and dwell with You.
In facing stormy situation, You are
greater than any worry I may have.
As a mother bird shelters her
young, You will cover me with
Your wings and Shelter me.
Keep me safe and be a Shield
and Shelter for me, for my life
is in Your very hands. Amen.

Lord, Thank You that in Your
mysterious and powerful ways,
You Send Your Angels around
us to protect Your people
in their journeys through life.
And so I look to You as my refuge
and shelter so that I will live in
freedom of the Spirit and not fear,
for God Will Take Care of me. Amen.

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you…
All you may need He will provide,
God will take care of you;
No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you…
God will take care of you.
Thru every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you. Amen.

Reflection on Psalm Book Four

Hearing God through His Word

Psalms Book Four (90-106)
mainly written by unknown authors
is similar to the book of Numbers.
Just as Numbers discusses the
relationship of the nation of Israel
to surrounding nations, these
psalms often mention the
relationship of God’s overruling
kingdom to the other nations.
Because we are citizens of the
kingdom of God, we can keep
the events and troubles of earth
in the proper perspective.

On Monday, we learn from Ps 90
that God Is Our Dwelling Place.
On Tuesday, we learn from Ps 91
that God Shields & Cares For Us.
On Wed, we learn from Ps 95/96
that God Is Our Maker & Saviour.
On Thu we learn from Ps 99/100
that God Is Forgiving & Merciful.
On Friday, we learn from Ps 103
that God Blesses Us With Benefits.
On Saturday, we learn from Ps 105
that God’s Plan Surely Will Not Fail.

Let us humble ourselves and pray
and seek His face. Help us O God
be Christ’s disciples who Hear You:
For You are our Dwelling Place
and that You Shield & Care For Us.
For You are our Maker & Saviour
and also Forgiving and Merciful.
For You Bless us with Benefits
and that Your Plan Will Never Fail.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Hearing God In Psalm 105 (Jun 7)

God’s Plan Will Not Fail

Backgrounder on Psalms 104-106:
In these psalms, we see three snap
shots of the great God you serve.
He is big enough to create and
rule the universe (Psalm 104);
He is small enough to rule in the
hearts of His people (Ps 105) and
He is loving enough to discipline
His rebellious children (Ps 106).

Lord, Your Plan Never Fails:
He Remembers His covenant…
with Abraham… To you I will give
the land of Canaan as inheritance…
He permitted no one to do them
wrong… saying: Do not touch
My Anointed ones… (Ps 105:7-15).
Then Israel arrived in Egypt…
And the Lord multiplied the
people of Israel until they became
too mighty for their enemies.
Then He turned the Egyptians
against the Israelites (v23-25).
The Lord spread out a cloud above
them as a covering and gave them
a great fire to light the darkness.
They asked for meat and he gave
them quail; he gave them manna.
He opened up a rock and
water gushed out (v39-41).

Father God, grateful that You
Remember Your covenant forever;
and that You are quick to honor it.
You had promised to protect Your
people from those who plan evil;
& so You’ll stand up in my defense.
For I am also Your Anointed and
surely You will also not tolerate
those who will try to harm me.
In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

Lord, grateful for the assurance
that Your sovereign plans never fail.
When everything seems hopeless,
remind me of Your plan for the
Israelites in captivity in Egypt.
Help me Lord to see things
from Your eternal perspective.
Help me to hold on to the reality
that in spite of the way things look,
You are always In Control. Amen.

Lord, thankful for Your Word
showing Your faithful Provision
to Your people Israel in history.
Thank You Lord for all the ways
You have Provided for my needs.
Help me to respond with thanks-
giving and obedience to Your will.
I look to You Lord as Jehovah Jireh
My Provider, for You will provide
all my needs, and for Your plan
never fails. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
