Hearing God In Genesis 12

Follow God’s Calling & Trust Him

Genesis 12-14 describe God’s call
of Abram to leave his home in Ur
(near Persian Gulf) and travel to
a distant but unspecified new land.
Abram faces many distractions
along the way including the death
of his father and a severe famine.
But God is looking for a person
of faith who will trust Him
completely to keep His Promises.
For Abram those promises include
becoming a great nation and
experiencing great blessing in
the face of overwhelming odds.

Lord, we’ll Obey Your Call of Faith:
Now the Lord had said to Abram:
Get out of your country, from your
family… to a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation…
and you shall be a blessing…
So Abram departed (Gen 12:1-3).
Then the Lord appeared to Abram
and said: To your descendants
I will give this land… And he
moved… to the mountain east
of Bethel and he pitched his tent…
there be built an altar… and called
on the name of the Lord (v7-8).
Then Abram went up from Egypt…
and he went… from the South
as far as Bethel… to the place of
the altar which he had made there
at first. And there Abram called on
the name of the Lord (Gen 13:1-4).

Lord, when You called Abram to leave
the land of his birth, it was so that
You cld give him the Promised Land.
Grateful You call us To something,
and not just away From something.
Lord You are always calling us to the
place where Yr provision awaits us.
it’s Comforting that Your commands
are always related to Your Promises.
Whilst You command obedience,
that will also clear the way for
Your promised provision. Amen.

Lord, noted Your calling will involve
sacrifices but it’s comforting that
it’s sacrifice for something more.
For we note Lord Your promises
to Abram: to make him into a great
nation and be a blessing to others.
When called, help us not to dwell on
what we may have to leave behind.
But instead focus our heart & mind
on what we will be receiving. Amen.

Lord, we notice that promise,
worship and communion are all
bound up in Your call to Abram
and in his calling on Your name.
We also noticed that wherever
Abraham the friend of God had
a tent, God had an altar as well.
Spur us Lord to emulate Abraham
in erecting a family altar of prayer
and devotion unto You. Amen.

Thought for the Week: Gen 5

Walk Constantly With God

The perfect environment into which man was placed is now shattered by the entrance of sin. Disobedience follows as the firstfamily eats from the forbiddentree and is expelled from thegarden. The results of their sinspread quickly as humankindand the whole creation fallunder the penalty of death.Cain becomes the first murderer, and the downward spiral continuesfrom Adam to Noah, paving theway for God’s sweeping judgmentupon the wickedness of the world.

Lord, we purpose to Walk with You:
Enoch lived 65 years and begot
Methuselah. After he begot
Methuselah, Enoch walked with
God 300 years and had sons
and daughters. So all the days of
Enoch were 365 years. And Enoch
walked with God; and he was not,
for God took him (Gen 5:21-25).
By faith Enoch was taken away
so that he did not see death,
and was not found because God
had taken him; for before he was
taken he had this testimony, that
he pleased God. But without faith
it is impossible to please Him, for
he who comes to God must believe
that… He is a rewarder of those
who diligently seek Him(Heb 11:5-6)

Lord, thanks for the lesson from
Gen 5 that You walked With Enoch.
Noted You almighty creator God
calibrated Your stride for Enoch’s
sake to take into account his frailty.
So intimate was Your relationship
with Enoch that when the time came
for Enoch to leave earth and enter
eternity, his walk just continued; and
received Christ’s promise: He who
believes in Me shall never die. Amen.

Lord, we thank You for the gift of
Your Presence. I am grateful and
filled with wonder and amazed
that You love me so much You
actually desire my presence.
Teach me more each day what
it really means to walk with You.
Help my thoughts not to be
wholly occupied with the world’s
passing show. But grant each day
may strengthen my hold on the
reality of the unseen world. Amen.

Lord, we are challenged by the long
term faithfulness of Enoch that
he walked with You for 300 years.
Help us also to please You like
Enoch who not only believe in You
but also earnestly seek after You.
Help us also to seek after Your
holiness for we learn in Jude that
Enoch warns people that God is to
be worshiped and obeyed. Amen.

Reflection on Genesis 1-11

Hearing God thru His Word

Genesis 1&2 gives a concise over
-view of the progress of creation,
climaxing in the creation of man.
In Genesis 3-5, the perfect
environment into which man
was placed is now shattered by
the entrance of sin. The results
of the sin of Adam and Eve
spread quickly as humankind
and the whole creation fall
under the penalty of death.
In Gen 6-9, humanity becomes
so sinful that God prepares to
execute the death sentence on
the entire race. In grace He directs
Noah – a just man who walks
with God – to build a great ship
in order to escape the coming
judgment. Noah obeys God, and
while the flood waters purge the
earth, the ark preserves human
and animal life for a fresh start.

On Wed, we learn from launch
that God truly speaks to His
people to guide, instruct, correct,
inspire and encourage them.
And that He seeks to draw us
closer to Him; to do His will,
to bear much fruit & be blessed…
On Thu, we learn from Gen 2/3
to Draw Near to Relational God.
On Friday, we learn from Gen 5
to Walk Constantly with God.
On Sat, we learn from Gen 6/9
to Obey Direction of the Lord.

Let us humble ourselves and pray
and seek His face. Help us O God
be Christ’s disciples who Hear You:
For You are the Relational God and
You want us to draw near to You.
For You desire our fellowship and
love us to walk constantly with You.
For You Provide Direction for our
good & desire our Obedience.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Hearing God in Genesis 6-9

Obey Direction of the Lord

In the course of its rebellion,
humanity becomes so sinful that
God prepares to execute the
death sentence on the entire race.
In grace He directs Noah to build
a great ship to escape judgment.
Noah Obeys God & while the flood
purges the earth, the arc preserves
human life for a fresh re-start.
After a safe landing on Mt Ararat,
God makes a new covenant to
Noah and his descendants; and
said: I will remember my covenant.

Lord, we’ll walk closely & Obey You:
The Lord observed the extent of
human wickedness on the earth,
and he saw that everything they
thot was constantly & totally evil.
So the Lord was sorry He had ever
made them… it broke His heart.
And the Lord said: I will wipe this
human race I have created from
the face of the earth… But Noah
found favour with the Lord.
Noah was a righteous man… and
he walked with God (Gen 6:5-9).
And God said to Noah: Build a large
boat from cypress wood and water-
proof it with tar, inside and out…
And of every living thing of all fresh
you shall bring two of every sort
into the boat; male and female…
Thus Noah did; according to all
that God commanded him(v13-22)
Whenever the rainbow appears
in the clouds, I will see it and
remember the everlasting
covenant between God and
all living creatures of every kind
on the earth (Gen 9:16). Amen.

Lord, You created human beings
in Your own image;but they became
sinful when they disobeyed God.
Noah was spared from destruction
of the flood because he obeyed You.
Lord, help me to live each day
with a deep sense of Your presence,
even as I purpose to spend time
knowing You and talking with You.
And help me Lord to hear Your
voice speaking to my heart so that
I will follow Your leading. Amen.

Lord, we note Noah was totally
obedient to Your Instructions,
spending more than 100 years
to build the big ark and collecting
all the animals and creatures.
Teach me Lord to walk in close
fellowship with You; and to obey
Your instructions for my blessing
and for life purpose and mission.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Lord, praise You that You are
indeed a covenant keeping God.
Help me to understand and
remember exactly what Your
promises are so that I can recall
them in my mind, keep them
in my heart and speak them out
whenever I need to push doubt
away from me. Help me remember
that Jesus is the ultimate proof
that You have already kept Your
greatest promise to us. Amen.

Hearing God In Genesis 2&3

Draw Near to Relational God

Genesis 2 details how God’s image
-bearers were created – man from
the dust of the ground and woman
from his rib. In Gen 3, the perfect
environment into which man was
placed is shattered by the entrance of sin. Disobedience follows
as the first family eats from the
forbidden tree and is expelled
from the garden. The results
of their sin spread quickly as
humankind and the whole creation
fall under the penalty of death.

Lord, we’ll Draw Near to Hear You:
The LORD (Jehovah) God formed
man of the dust of the ground,
and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became
a living being (Genesis 2:7).
Now the serpent was more cunning
than any beast of the field which
the Lord God had made. And
he said to the woman: Has God
indeed said: You shall not eat of
every tree in the garden (Gen 3:1)
Then the man and his wife heard
the sound of the Lord God as
He was walking in the garden
in the cool of the day, and they
hid from the Lord God among
the trees of the garden. But
the Lord God called to the man:
Where are you? (Gen 3:8-9).

Lord Jehovah, You are worthy
of all praise and adoration.
You are the God who made
the heavens and the earth.
You rule over all, and yet You also
seek relationship with Your creation.
Thank You for sustaining our
lives and delighting in our souls.
Thank You for not only being high
and lifted up but also dwelling
among the lowly. Thank You for
desiring to Be Close to us. Amen.

Lord, we will Hear Your Voice:
We spend much of our lives Lord
in a battle to trust Your goodness
because the evil one constantly
cast doubts & misrepresent You.
I invite You to move my heart
and synchronise it with Yours.
I need to connect with You more;
for only Your voice & revelation
can accomplish that. Give me
clear insights of Your will. Amen.

Lord, we will Draw Near to You:
I want to have a close walk
with You Lord. Help me not
to forfeit that relationship by
being drawn toward the world.
Enable me to hear Your voice
calling me so that I will answer
without delay. And help me not
hide from You for any reason;
but instead seek Your forgiveness
and draw near to You. Amen.

Launch of New 2025 Series

Hearing God thru His Word

We have been utilising Scripture
to form prayers so that we learn
to think as God thinks; and pray
within His will, thus pleasing Him.
Having prayed thru Scripture on
Seeking God thru Biblical Prayers,
Trusting God thru His Promises &
Adoring God thru Thanks & Praise;
we continue this discipling walk
with our new and exciting series
on Hearing God through His Word !

“God Is Not Silent. It is the nature of
of God to speak, writes AW Tozer;
and it’s true!! God’s relationship
with human beings in Scripture
and throughout history gives ample
evidence that God guides, instructs,
corrects, inspires, encourages,
reveals and more. And He is even
called “the Word.” He has always
been vocal and He always will be.

We can find many stories of people
who misheard God; but there are
far more testimonies of people
hearing Him clearly & bearing much
fruit from what they have heard!
Everyone can learn to recognise
God’s voice – seniors, adults, youth;
the highly educated & the illiterate,
leaders & followers. God doesn’t
mind the skeptics. He simply speaks
to people who will listen and believe.

We could spend the rest of our lives
learning to recognise God’s voice,
and many of us likely will. But we can
be confident that if we seek Him,
He will make Himself available to us.
If we listen, He will speak. And if we
believe what we have heard, He will
show us more! The God who speaks
is always seeking to take us deeper
into His Will & draw us closer to Him.

Henry Blackaby in his workbook
Experiencing God says God Speaks
by the Holy Spirit through the Word,
Circumstances and His Church.
In this current series, we will be
focussing on Hearing God through
His Word; but needless to say
we will also see God speaking
thru circumstances & His people.
And we will also see God speaking
in many other ways including
angels, visions, dreams, symbols,
gentle whispers and miracles.

Listening to God is a process,
a journey and an adventure. It will
take time, but it’s worth the effort.
             God promises that those who
seek Him will be rewarded with
 His       presence and His voice!
And the words of the living God
 are powerful and life changing.
May He bless our desire to hear Him.
Amen and amen.

Reflection on the NT Letters Genre

Adoring God thru Thanks & Praise

The path to intentional discipleship
is to grow towards spiritual maturity
by nurturing key disciple attitudes.
So for past 2-3 years, we had been
Seeking God thru biblical prayers;
and Trusting God thru His Promises.
And for the past 12 months; we have
been Adoring God through Thanking
Him for what He has done for us
and Praising Him for who He is.

From the earliest days of the church,
the singing of hymns and spiritual
songs has been an integral part
of Christian worship. It is a means
for believers to express praise to
their Creator and Saviour. And it’s
also a way for us to communicate
with God using more than words.
For it enables us to pour out the
grateful feelings of the heart and
to express commitment to God.

We are meditating through the Bible,
which is clearly organised by genres:
Laws, History, Poetry and Prophets…
And the purpose of the Letters,
written by Paul and other apostles
was to reveal truth about Jesus,
the gospel, and ways church leaders
as well as members should conduct
themselves so that others would see
and accept Lord Jesus thru them.

Here we have the key thoughts from
Acts, apostolic letters & Revelation;
which reveal & draw pple to Jesus:
S16: God Always Near Us (Acts 17)
S23: God Doesn’t Condemn Us (R8)
S29: God Provides Way Out (1C10)
Oct7: G Comforts & Delivers(2Cor1)
Oct14: God Grants Freedom (Gal 5)
Oct21: God Gives Sp Gifts (Eph 4)
O28: G Supplies Our Needs (Phil4)
N4: G Sanctifies Completely (1Th5)
N11:G Desires Eternal Mindset (1T6)
N18: G Stands By t Faithful (2Tim 4)
