Thought for the Week: Psalm 139

God Cares For His People

Ps 135-139 are about Praising God.
Sometimes it’s easy to praise the
Lord simply by recalling the past
(Ps 135-136); at other times,
past memories produce more
pain rather than praise (Ps 137).
But even times of trouble can be
cause for Praise to God (Ps 138).
This is so as you think about the
infinite knowledge & unceasing
presence of Your mighty God (Ps 139).

Lord, Praise Your Constant Care:
You discern my going out and
my lying down; You Are Familiar
with all my ways. Before a word
is on my tongue You know it
completely O Lord (Ps 139:3-4).
Where can I free from Yr Presence?
If I go to the heavens, You are there;
If I settle on the far side of the
sea, even there Your hand will
guide and hold me fast (v7-10).
Every day of my life was recorded.
Every moment was Laid Out before
a day had passed. How precious
are Your Thoughts (v16-17) Amen.

Lord, praise You for Knowing me
so well. You monitor my movements
and my thoughts. I want to rest
in the truth that I am always on
Your mind. You promise to guide
my steps into places of peace.
Thank You Lord for the comfort
of knowing I am so well known by
You and thoroughly cared for. Amen.

Lord, praise You for Your Omni-
presence and good plans for me.
You promise in Your word that I can
never get away from Your presence.
Wherever You take me, Your hand
will guide me, and Your strength
will support me. Guide me and
support me with Your strength
each day of my life. For apart
from You I can do nothing. Amen.

Lord, You created me for a purpose
& has prepared a Good Plan for me.
For You Charted the path ahead
of me and laid out every moment.
Help me to take comfort in this
knowledge of Your concern
for me and constant care of me.
Help me to fully understand and
appreciate the depth of Your love.
Help me not to fear for You are with
me, for me and around me. Amen.

Seeking God In Psalm 145

God Saves His People (July 30)

Backgrounder on Psalms 140-145:
Your enemies will either drive you
from God or drive you to God.
In David’s hour of need he found
a sure Refuge (Ps 140, Ps 142),
a trustworthy Friend (Ps 141),
a listening Ear (Ps 143),
a strong Arm (Ps 144),
a Merciful King (Ps 145);
and You Can Too !! Amen.

Lord, You’re Merciful & Will Save Us:
The Lord is kind and Merciful…
He showers compassion on all…
Your faithful followers will bless You.
They will talk about the glory of
Your kingdom; they will celebrate
examples of Yr power (Ps145:8-11)
The Lord is faithful to all His
promises & gracious in all He does.
The Lord Upholds all who fall & lift
up all who are bowed down(v13-14)
The Lord Is Near to all who call on
Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire
of those who fear Him; He also will
Hear their cry & Save them (v18-19)

Lord, You are all Merciful, full of
loving-kindness and compassion.
You are good to all, full of grace;
and You do what You promise!
Reveal more of Yourself to me.
For I want to tell others about
the glory of Your kingdom
and examples of Your power.
Help me tell of Your mighty deeds
and praise You forever, Amen.

Lord, You promise to Help those
who fall; and sometimes I feel like
I spend too much time in trouble.
You promise lifting those who are bent
beneath their loads, so Come to my
aid or my situation will not change.
When I am weary and worn-down,
prompt me to look to You in faith.
And make me Lord to be sensitive to
others who are heavy-laden. Amen.

Lord, Your Word says when I call
on You in truth, You will be close
to me. I confess the times when
I have doubted You’re near to hear
my prayers, because it seemed
my prayers went unanswered.
Help me pray even more fervently
when concerned nothing changes
still. For You the Sovereign God
does things Your Way & Your Time.
Help us to wait upon You & surely
You Will Come & Save Us. Amen.

Seeking God In Psalm 140

God Delivers His People (July 29)

Backgrounder on Psalms 140-145:
Your enemies will either drive you
from God or drive you to God.
In David’s hour of need he found
a sure Refuge (Ps 140, Ps 142),
a Trustworthy Friend (Ps 141),
a listening Ear (Ps 143),
a strong Arm (Ps 144),
a merciful King (Ps 145);
and You Can Too !! Amen.

Deliver me O Lord from evil men…
who plan evil things in their hearts…
They sharpen their tongues like
a serpent; the poison of vipers
is on their lips (Psalm 140:1-3).
I said to the Lord: You are my God;
Hear the voice of my supplications,
O God the Lord, the strength
of my salvation (v6-7).
I know the Lord will maintain
the cause of the afflicted,
and justice for the poor.
Surely the righteous shall
give thanks to Your name;
The upright shall dwell
in Your presence (v12-13).

Lord God Almighty, You are the
Strong Deliverer; You are the fortress
and You are the rock. And whoever
who is in You will surely be saved.
I praise You for You are powerful.
I praise You for You are my deliverer.
I praise You for You are my Saviour.
Thank You for whispering time and
again Your promises of deliverance.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Lord, sometimes anxiety and fear
creep into our thoughts to cause
us to doubt Your power and might
and the willingness to deliver us.
And we turn our thoughts to
what we could lose rather than
trusting in Your sovereign power.
Forgive us Lord for not trusting
Your impending deliverance in time
of distress. In Jesus’ mighty name.

Lord & Strong Deliverer, financial,
emotional and physical attacks
can rob us of joy, hope and peace.
May You be at forefront of my mind
so I know with full assurance You
as my deliverer are stronger than
anything that comes against me.
Give me Lord the peace that comes
with trust; and the grace that comes
with hope. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Seeking God In Psalm 136 (July 27)

God Loves His People Enduringly

Sometimes it’s easy to praise God
by recalling the past (Ps 135-136).
At other times memories of the past
produce more pain than praise (137).
But even times of trouble can be
cause for Praise to God (Ps 138).
This is so as you meditate about
the unceasing presence of Your
omnipotent God (Psalm 139).

Lord, we’ll Revere In Your Love:
Oh give thanks to the Lord,
for He is good! Oh give thanks
to the God of gods! For His mercy
endures forever (Ps 136:1-2).
To Him who alone does great wonders,
For His mercies endures forever…
To Him who laid out the earth
above the waters, For His
mercy endures forever (v4-6).
Who remembered us in our lowly
state,for His mercy endures forever.
And rescued us from our enemies,
for His mercy endures forever;
Who gives food to all flesh,
for His mercy endures forever.
O give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures (v23-26).

Lord, the blessed reality is Your
faithful love towards us. Were it not
for Your faithful love, we will have
no hope. We see in this psalm what
divine love looks like: the rescue of
redemption, the rest of provision,
the warm of being remembered.
Your faithful love endures forever.
Let me never lose sight of Your
great enduring love for me. Amen.

Lord, nothing can stop You from
loving me. For Your love will work
through every situation these days
just as Your faithful love carried
Your people Israel in days of old.
Lord, I can trust Your love today,
tomorrow and for the rest of my life.
Thank You that Your love endures
forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, You are waiting to show love
and compassion to Your people.
You are the one, true, faithful God;
why should I look elsewhere for help.
Give me Lord courage to wait on You.
Strengthen my faith Lord even as
I see Your faithfulness in my life.
Lord, I will Revere In Your Love;
I will Abide In Your Presence and
I will Hold to Your Promises. Amen.

Seeking God to Psalm 127 (July 26)

God Gives Rest to His People

Backgrounder on Psalms 120-127:
These psalms deal with topics
dear to the heart of travellers
far from home: peace (120, 122);
provision (123, 124, 126); and
Protection (121, 125, 127). As you
read these “hymns of the highway”
imagine yourself on a journey of life.

Lord, You Build & Give Rest:
Unless the Lord Builds a house,
the work of the builders is useless.
Unless the Lord protects a city,
guarding it with sentries will do
no good. It is useless for you
to work so hard from early
morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat;
for God Gives Rest to His
loved ones (Psalm 127:1-2).

Lord, thanks for the reminder that
while progress is good, it must be
seen in the light of Your provision.
Whilst human striving can provide
benefits, it can also be destructive.
For only by conforming our efforts
to God’s will & plan will our efforts
construct anything worthwhile.
And we trust You God to prevent
our work from being wasted. Amen.

Lord, I acknowledge that without
dependence and trust in You, all
my work is in vain & effort wasted.
I need and want You Lord to be
the foundation of my life, my family
and my vocation so that the work
of my hands will bear fruit that
honours You. And I will be able to enjoy the rest that You give. Amen.

Lord, thanks for the promise that
You Give Rest to Your loved ones.
For You God didn’t wire us to work
like machines 24/7 all the time.
In Your goodness, You God has
promised to Give us Rest so that
we can also have balance in life.
And we can Trust You God with
the results for You are Almighty
and You are a faithful God. Amen.

Seeking God In Psalm 126 (July 25)

God Will Restore His People

Backgrounder on Psalms 120-127:
These psalms deal with topics
dear to the heart of travellers
far from home: peace (120, 122);
protection (121, 125, 127); and
Provision (123, 124, 126). As you
read these “hymns of the highway”
imagine yourself on a journey of life.

Lord, You’ll Restore Your People:
When the Lord Brought Back
His exiles to Jerusalem,
it was like a dream!
We were filled with laughter,
and we sang for joy. Yes,
the Lord has done amazing things
for us! What joy! (Psalm 126:1-3).
Those who plant in tears
Will Harvest with shouts of joy.
They weep as they go to plant
their seed, but they sing as
they return with the harvest,
Bringing In the Sheaves (v5-6).

Lord, thank You for not giving up
on Your people and thank You
for doing amazing things for us.
Just like God’s people returning
from exile, we will praise You for
Your grace that Brings Restoration.
My heart is filled with the joy of
knowing that You hold out a loving
hand and say: “Trust me! Try again
and know that I am with you.”
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Lord, when we plant the seed
of God’s Word in the hearts of
those we love; your promise
is that the harvest is coming.
One day we will see many of
those seeds come to fruition.
Help us not to despair but instead
keep on planting. For U God will not
waste the seed we have obediently
scattered. And one day we will
see the fruit of our labour. Amen.

Lord, Going forth with weeping,
sowing for You Master,
Though the loss sustained
our spirit often grieves.
Waiting for the harvest,
and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing,
bringing in the sheaves. Amen !!

Thought for the Week: Psalm 118

The LORD For His People

Backgrounder on Psalms 111-118:
Praise permeates nearly every
line of these eight psalms. God is
praiseworthy for His care (Ps 111),
His commandments (Ps 112),
His name(Ps 113), His power(Ps 114),
His uniqueness (Ps 115),
His Deliverance (Ps 116), His truth
(Ps 117) and His mercy (Ps 118).
What other response could
there be than to Praise the Lord.

Lord Almighty, You are For Me:
Give thanks to the Lord for He is
good & His Mercy endures forever…
Let those who fear the Lord now say:
His mercy endures forever (Ps 118:1,4).
In my distress I prayed to the
Lord and the Lord answered me
and rescued me. The Lord is
On My Side, I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
Yes, the Lord is For me;
He will help me (Ps 118:5-7).
The stone which the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
This was the Lord’s doing…
This is the day the Lord has made.
We’ll Rejoice & be glad in it (v22-24)

Lord, this is the day You have
made, a place of new beginning.
No matter what may happen,
help me to rejoice and be glad
in the day that You have made.
Help me to see Your goodness
and lift up my head and rejoice.
And help me to see my problem
as one more great opportunity
to depend on You Lord. Amen.

Father God, as Your child, Nothing
can separate me from Your love.
Thank You Lord for answering
and helping me in my distress.
Thank You Lord for the truth
that You are For me, for it is
assuring of Your concern for me.
Help me to resolve not to be afraid
because the Almighty Lord of the
universe is On My Side. Amen.

Lord, thank You for being For me
and You bring me through trouble.
You are my ally and my hero with
strong arm giving me confidence.
You are my Father and nothing
can separate me from Your love.
You are my impregnable fortress,
my unconquerable tower of safety.
You are my shield to protect me
from harm; and as I take refuge in
You, I don’t have to be afraid. Amen.
